Castle Libraries in the Czech Republic - Lecture

DetailCastle Libraries in the Czech Republic - Lecture

7.2.2017

The beginnings of castle libraries in the Czech lands can be traced more significantly during the Renaissance, but most of these collections were destroyed by the Thirty Years' War. A significant development of castle libraries occurred during the Baroque period, when most owners sought to build universal libraries containing all the knowledge of their time. The further development then led to the individualism of the collections. After 1945 and 1948, all castle libraries were confiscated, but surprisingly, most of them survived this difficult period, and the libraries still serve both professional and lay audiences today.

The lecture will take place on the occasion of the birth of Baroness Ulrika von Levetzow (4.2.1804 – 13.11.1899)
